Vagelos Institute for Biomedical Research Education

The VIBRE PhD Pathway

A $175 million gift from Roy'54 and Diana Vagelos created the Vagelos Insititute for Biomedical Research Education (VIBRE) at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons to support PhD students pursuing the most creative, potentially disruptive ideas in biomedical sciences and also encourage the training of more physician-scientists. The largest portion of the gift - $125 million - will establish an endowment to change the prevailing approach for funding PhD students, giving them greater freedom to explore different interests at the start of the careers. The mission of the VIBRE Biomedical PhD Pathway is to provide an academic home for our PhD students by creating a research environment conducive to educating the next generation of scientists prepared to tackle challenging research questions and generate world-changing scientific breakthroughs.
